    About Labradorite  –

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar that looks like plain grey stone until it catches the light, then flashes peacock blue, green, gold and even orange. That shimmer, called labradorescence, comes from light bouncing between microscopic layers in the crystal.

It crystallises in mafic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt and anorthosite as magma cools slowly deep underground.

    Cool Facts  –

Labradorite's flashing blues, golds and greens (labradorescence) come from light bouncing between microscopically thin layers inside the feldspar.

It was first described in 1770 on the Isle of Paul, off Labrador in Canada, which gave it its name.

Inuit legend says the Northern Lights were once trapped in the rocks of Labrador, and a warrior's spear freed most of them, leaving the rest in the stone.

The Finnish variety spectrolite, with its vivid full-rainbow flash, was discovered during the Second World War when defence works were being dug.
