About Picture Jasper  –

Picture Jasper is a silica-rich rock whose bands and dendrites often look like miniature desert landscapes, complete with hills, skies and trees. No two pieces tell the same scene, which is half the fun of choosing one.

It formed when fine sediment or volcanic ash was silicified by silica-rich water, preserving layers and flow patterns coloured by iron and manganese oxides.

Cool Facts  –

Picture jasper's landscapes are layers of silt and iron oxide laid down in ancient mud, then hardened by silica.

The best-known material comes from Oregon and Idaho in the USA.

Each polished slice shows a different "scene", which is where the name comes from.

Famous varieties are named after the places they come from, such as Biggs Jasper, uncovered in Oregon during the building of a highway in the 1960s.
