About Snowflake Obsidian  –

Snowflake Obsidian is black volcanic glass sprinkled with white or grey 'snowflakes'. These are clusters of cristobalite crystals that began to grow within the glass over time.

It forms when obsidian slowly begins to crystallise, a process called devitrification, producing radiating clusters of cristobalite.

Cool Facts  –

The white "snowflakes" are cristobalite, a form of silica that crystallised as the glass slowly devitrified.

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when lava cools too fast for crystals to grow.

Most snowflake obsidian comes from Utah and Mexico.

The 'snowflakes' are evidence of age: over time, obsidian slowly crystallises, which is why very old obsidian is rare.
