    About Sunstone  –

Sunstone is a feldspar, usually oligoclase or labradorite, that sparkles with a coppery glitter from tiny platelets of hematite or native copper. The effect, called aventurescence, makes it glow like sunlight on water. Oregon sunstone is prized for its transparent reds and greens.

It forms in igneous rocks, with the reflective platelets growing inside the feldspar as the crystal slowly cools.

    Cool Facts  –

Sunstone's glitter (aventurescence) comes from tiny flat inclusions of copper or hematite that catch the light.

Vikings are said to have used a "sunstone" to find the sun on overcast days – though that was probably Iceland spar, a calcite.

Oregon sunstone is unusual in containing pure copper, and is the state gemstone of Oregon.

Oregon sunstone is the official state gem of Oregon; the 'sunstone' of Viking sagas used for navigation was probably a different mineral, such as Iceland spar.
