About Zebra Jasper  –

Zebra Jasper is a trade name for black-and-white or grey-and-white striped stone, polished into tumbles, beads and palm stones. Material sold under this name varies: some is banded jasper or chalcedony, and some is a striped quartz-rich rock. The bold monochrome pattern makes it easy to recognise.

The bands formed as layers of silica and darker minerals were deposited in turn, then hardened and sometimes folded by later geological movement.

Cool Facts  –

Zebra jasper's black and white stripes are alternating bands of dark iron-rich and light silica-rich layers.

Much of it is actually a banded marble or quartzite rather than a true jasper, but the trade name has stuck.

Most zebra jasper comes from India and South Africa.

Australia's 'zebra stone' from the Kimberley is an entirely different rock, a striped siltstone about 600 million years old whose bands still puzzle geologists.
