Crystals for Each Zodiac Sign

"What crystal suits my star sign?" is one of our most-asked questions. Here's the short answer for all twelve — the traits astrology traditionally gives each sign, the stones that go with them, and a little of the astronomy behind it all.

Quick tips before you pick

  • Go by feel first: if a stone catches your eye before you've read a word about it, that's reason enough.

  • You're more than your sun sign: plenty of folk pick for their moon or rising sign, or simply for whoever the gift is for.

  • Start small: one tumble or one wee box is plenty.

  • Mind the water: malachite, celestite and selenite shouldn't go in water, and salt dulls a polish. A dry cloth is all most pieces need.

  • Stuck? Just ask: tell us the birthday and we'll do the rest — our team hand-picks everything in the trays.

The zodiac in the night sky

Long before anyone paired stones with star signs, the zodiac was a map of the sky. A few favourites we love sharing across the counter:

  • It's a band, not a line: the zodiac is a belt of sky about eight degrees either side of the ecliptic — the path the Sun appears to trace across the year. The Moon and planets wander the same belt, which is why you always find them in a zodiac constellation.

  • There's a thirteenth constellation: the Sun crosses Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, for about eighteen days a year. It never got a sign because twelve equal slices were tidier than thirteen uneven ones — and twelve matched the lunar months.

  • The signs have drifted: the Earth's axis wobbles over a 26,000-year cycle, called precession. Since the dates were set in Babylon the stars have slipped about a whole sign's width, so your sign and the constellation the Sun actually sits in are no longer the same.

  • You can't see your own sign on your birthday: the Sun is right in front of it, so it's up in daylight. Wait six months and it rides high at midnight.

  • Biggest and smallest: Virgo is the largest zodiac constellation, second-largest of all eighty-eight. Capricornus is the smallest of the twelve.

Did you know? Antares, the red heart of Scorpius, is a supergiant so vast that in place of our Sun it would swallow the orbit of Mars. Its name means "rival of Ares" — rival of Mars — for its ruddy colour.
From St Andrews: at 56 degrees north, Scorpius and Sagittarius barely clear our southern horizon, so the summer zodiac is the hardest to spot from Scotland. Taurus, Gemini and Leo make up for it on clear winter nights.

Stones that look like a piece of sky — celestite takes its name from the Latin for heavenly:

Fire signs: ♈ Aries, ♌ Leo and ♐ Sagittarius

Warm, bright stones for the fire signs — reds, oranges and golds.

♈ Aries · 21 March – 19 April — traditionally cast as bold, competitive and impatient, the one who's first through the door. Stones: carnelian, red jasper and garnet. Carnelian is a reddish-orange chalcedony the Egyptians carved into amulets, and crystal lore links it with courage.

♌ Leo · 23 July – 22 August — warm, generous and a little theatrical, happiest when seen. Stones: sunstone, tiger's eye and citrine. Sunstone's coppery glitter is called schiller, caused by thousands of tiny inclusions catching the light. Leo's brightest star, Regulus, means "little king".

♐ Sagittarius · 22 November – 21 December — restless, optimistic and blunt, always planning the next trip. Stones: turquoise, lapis lazuli and sodalite. Lapis has been mined in Afghanistan for six thousand years. Look towards Sagittarius and you're looking at the centre of our galaxy.

Earth signs: ♉ Taurus, ♍ Virgo and ♑ Capricorn

Greens, browns and deep earthy tones for the grounded signs.

♉ Taurus · 20 April – 20 May — steady, loyal and stubborn, with a real fondness for comfort and good food. Stones: rose quartz, emerald and malachite. Malachite is a copper carbonate, soft at 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale, so keep it dry.

♍ Virgo · 23 August – 22 September — precise, practical and quietly helpful, the one who notices everything. Stones: moss agate, amazonite and peridot. Those mossy threads in moss agate aren't plant matter at all — they're mineral inclusions that happen to branch like foliage.

♑ Capricorn · 22 December – 19 January — ambitious, patient and dry-humoured, quietly running things. Stones: garnet, black tourmaline and smoky quartz. Garnet is a whole family of related minerals rather than one stone, which is why it comes in red, orange and green.

Air signs: ♊ Gemini, ♎ Libra and ♒ Aquarius

Stones that shimmer and shift as you turn them, for the curious signs.

♊ Gemini · 21 May – 20 June — curious, talkative and quick, easily bored. Stones: agate, citrine and labradorite. Labradorite's flash has its own word, labradorescence. Gemini's twin stars are Castor and Pollux — and Castor is secretly six stars orbiting each other.

♎ Libra · 23 September – 22 October — charming, diplomatic and fair-minded, hopeless at picking a restaurant. Stones: lapis lazuli, opal and rose quartz. Opal is one of October's birthstones — we wrote a whole guide on October's opal and tourmaline. Libra is the only sign represented by an object rather than a creature.

♒ Aquarius · 20 January – 18 February — independent, inventive and contrary, inclined to think sideways. Stones: amethyst, fluorite and clear quartz. Amethyst's purple comes from traces of iron reacting to natural radiation in the ground over a very long time.

Water signs: ♋ Cancer, ♏ Scorpio and ♓ Pisces

Moonlit, watery stones for the feeling signs.

♋ Cancer · 21 June – 22 July — nurturing, home-loving and fiercely loyal, with a soft centre well guarded. Stones: moonstone, pearl and selenite. Moonstone's blue glow is adularescence. Selenite is a gypsum and dissolves in water, so keep it dry.

♏ Scorpio · 23 October – 21 November — intense, private and determined, utterly loyal once you're in. Stones: obsidian, malachite and topaz. Obsidian isn't strictly a crystal — it's volcanic glass, cooled too fast for crystals to form, which is why it takes such a deep shine.

♓ Pisces · 19 February – 20 March — dreamy, kind and intuitive, something of an escape artist. Stones: aquamarine, amethyst and blue lace agate. Aquamarine and emerald are the same mineral, beryl — iron makes the sea-blue, chromium the green.

Myth or fact?

Myth: you can only use the crystals that "match" your sign. Zodiac crystal lists are a lovely modern tradition, not a rulebook — they vary from book to book. If you're a Capricorn who adores rose quartz, be a Capricorn who adores rose quartz.
Fact: birthstone and zodiac lists are different things. The list most jewellers use was set out by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912 and runs by calendar month, while signs straddle two months each — so they overlap but never quite line up.
Fact: your sign and your constellation have parted ways. Thanks to that 26,000-year wobble, someone born under Aries today has the Sun sitting in front of Pisces. Astrologers work from the season, astronomers from the stars.
