Bornite is a copper-iron sulphide that tarnishes to iridescent purples and blues – hence the name peacock ore.
Much "peacock ore" on the market is actually chalcopyrite treated with acid to bring up the colours.
It is an important copper ore, named after the Austrian mineralogist Ignaz von Born.
