About Sphalerite –

Sphalerite is the main ore of zinc, forming crystals that range from honey and red to jet black depending on iron content. Gem-quality pieces from Spain have a fire even stronger than diamond, though it is far too soft for everyday jewellery. Black, lustrous crystals are common companions to galena and quartz.

It forms in hydrothermal veins and in limestone-hosted ore deposits where zinc-rich fluids deposit sulphide minerals.
