About Petrified Wood –

Petrified Wood is ancient timber turned to stone, often preserving growth rings, bark and even cell structure in quartz and chalcedony. Holding a piece means holding a tree that grew millions of years ago.

Fallen trees buried rapidly in sediment or volcanic ash were soaked by silica-rich groundwater, which slowly replaced the wood with microcrystalline quartz. Iron and manganese added the reds, yellows and blacks.

Petrified wood is a fossil: over millions of years, silica-rich water replaced the wood cell by cell, keeping the grain and even the rings.

The colours come from trace metals – iron for reds, manganese for pinks and purples.

Some of the finest comes from Arizona's Petrified Forest, where the trees are 225 million years old.

At Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, visitors who took pieces home have posted so many back with letters blaming them for bad luck that the park keeps a 'conscience pile'.
