About Pietersite –

Pietersite is a brecciated relative of tiger's eye, where fibrous blue and gold quartz swirls in every direction like a storm cloud. Turn it under a lamp and the shimmer ripples across the surface.

It formed when fibrous tiger's eye and hawk's eye material was broken up by earth movements and then re-cemented by quartz and chalcedony, with some fibres partly altered to iron oxides.

Pietersite is a brecciated tiger eye: the fibres were broken up and re-cemented with quartz, giving swirling, chaotic bands.

It is named after Sid Pieters, who discovered it in Namibia in 1962.

Only two sources are known – Namibia and Hunan Province in China.

It was discovered in Namibia by Sid Pieters, who registered it in 1962, and the original Namibian deposit is now largely worked out.
