About Jet –
Jet is a deep black gem made from wood that has been fossilised over millions of years. It is very light and warm to the touch, and takes a soft, glassy polish.
It forms when driftwood sinks into sea-floor mud and is slowly squeezed and changed into a hard, coal-like material.

Jet is fossilised wood – ancient monkey-puzzle trees compressed under the sea floor around 180 million years ago.
The finest jet comes from Whitby in Yorkshire, and Queen Victoria's mourning for Albert made it the height of fashion.
Rubbed on wool it holds a static charge, like amber.
Whitby jet is about 180 million years old, and it became hugely popular after Queen Victoria wore it while mourning Prince Albert.
