    About Black Onyx  –

     

    Onyx is a variety of chalcedony with straight, parallel bands, classically black and white. Today the name is mostly used for deep, glossy black chalcedony, prized for jewellery and carvings because it takes a mirror-bright polish.

     

    It forms when silica-rich water fills cavities in volcanic rock, depositing layer after layer of microcrystalline quartz. The flat banding reflects gentle, steady deposition in horizontal layers.

    Onyx is banded chalcedony, the straight-banded cousin of agate; most black onyx is dyed to deepen the colour.

     

    Its name comes from the Greek for fingernail, from a legend that Cupid clipped Venus's nails and they became stone.

     

    The Romans carved it into cameos, using the light and dark layers.

     

    The name comes from the Greek word for fingernail, and one Greek myth claims Eros trimmed Aphrodite's nails while she rested and the Fates turned the clippings to stone.
