About Limonite –
Limonite is a catch-all name for rusty brown mixtures of hydrated iron oxides, mainly goethite. It often forms crusts, nodules or 'pseudomorphs' where it has replaced other minerals such as pyrite, keeping their shape.
It forms where iron-bearing minerals weather at the surface, often in bogs, soils and the upper parts of ore deposits.

Limonite is not a single mineral but a mixture of iron oxides and hydroxides – it is what rust becomes over geological time.
It is the pigment behind yellow ochre, used in cave paintings tens of thousands of years ago.
Bog iron, smelted by the Vikings, is limonite.
Yellow and brown ochre pigments, used in cave art tens of thousands of years ago, are largely limonite and goethite.
