About Sapphire –
Sapphire is corundum in every colour except red, most famously a velvety blue from iron and titanium. Incredibly hard and durable, it has been a symbol of royalty and loyalty for centuries.
It forms in metamorphic rocks and in some basalts and syenites, where aluminium-rich, silica-poor conditions allow corundum to grow; many sapphires are later washed into gem gravels.

Cool Facts –
Sapphire is corundum in any colour except red – the pink, yellow and green ones are called "fancy sapphires".
At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond in hardness, and synthetic sapphire is used for watch faces and phone camera lenses.
The star effect in some sapphires comes from tiny needles of rutile inside the stone.
The 12-carat Sri Lankan sapphire engagement ring chosen by Diana, Princess of Wales, is now worn by the Princess of Wales, Catherine.

Each year my sister is increasingly harder to buy for but think I have hit on a gem pardon the pun with these and intend to build up a bag of them for her, in time for her September birthday.
Bought for my sister to gift on her birthday I am confident it will be a well received present.
