Cool Facts: Colombianite, also known as Pseudotektite and Piedra Rayo, is an ancient form of Obsidian, found in what is now Colombia, dating back 30 million years ago. Though it is not meteoric glass, it is prized for its similarities to Moldavite and other Tektites - in both formation and energies.
Its formation mirrors the process in which Moldavite occurs - melting at extreme temperatures, cooling and reforming as a kind of glass. It forms in similar oval shapes to extraterrestrial Tektites, with small grooves and craters that dapple its surface.
The stone is relatively rare and highly sought after, often providing a more accessible alternative to the extremely rare and finite Moldavite. The name Piedra Rayo translates to ‘Lightning Stone’, possibly due to it being a volcanic glass.
