Cool Facts: Only found in central New York State in the USA, Herkimer Diamond is coveted for its natural double terminations. Though a Quartz, it got its ‘diamond’ name for its incredibly high clarity. This exceptional clarity is due to the Quartz forming extremely slowly. 
 
It is believed to have formed during the Carboniferous period, anywhere from 300 to 360 million years ago. Natural liquid inclusions (enhydro) can be made up of pockets of salt-water or petroleum. Other inclusions can be black carbon or pockets of carbon dioxide. Each of these inclusions help date how long ago Herkimer Diamonds formed.
